Valentines day stinks when you're alone. It's no better when a poet
like Adrienne Rich writes, "The more I live, the more I think two people
together is a miracle." It's a national holiday to fumble upon those
feelings inside. It's a another day to do something as stupid as stay up
all night, play music, and wait for her to never show. But what if she
does? What are the chances? Might as well be prepared. Here's a
collection of favorites.
The Best Of Chet Baker Sings; Chet Baker
He was a trumpet player by trade but he also sang, and when he sang one
almost believes people can indeed die from a broken heart. And no one
dies from a broken heart. Take on a lover, buy this CD, and messenger
it to her with only a post-it note saying, "Bring this over tonight."
Portishead; Portishead
Probably one of the sexiest concerts I've ever been to. This was two
years ago and in Worcester, MA. Beth is haunting. Suicidal and erotic
and whatever happens that night, the hours stay with you. This album is
consistent and there's no need to skip songs. Half-open eyes and gasp.
Best Of Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong
The thing is you feel what you feel, and that's something you can't
control. That's something no one can take away either. Differences used
to be a thing of joy. Whether toMAEto or toMAHto, poTAEto or poTAHto,
people back then kissed and just called the whole thing off. This is the
kind of music you ask a girl to slow dance with.Small steps, her chin
on your shoulder, and lots of warm smiles.
Who Can You Trust?; Morcheeba
It was one of those bars in the city where there's no sign outside, and
you go down the stairs, then up the stairs into a black place with tall
ceilings, visuals morphing on the wall, trip-hop playing not too loud.
She said, "God, Morcheeba. Every time I hear this I feel like doing
some coke and fucking my brains out." You just might find yourself
feeling the same.
